What's right for me?

At Smiling Wide, we will always choose the most appropriate treatment for your situation. We have a mixture of modern treatments which are designed to accommodate practically any orthodontic situation. The orthodontic treatments we offer fit broadly into four areas:

Clear braces

Fixed appliances (braces) are seen as traditional braces. They remain in common use for orthodontics as they provide the most efficient and effective way of correcting a smile. Smiling Wide uses clear brackets for the upper front teeth, unless you request the low profile slimline metal brackets.

Removable appliances

Removable appliances (plates) are not braces. Unlike braces which are used to move teeth and are attached directly to the teeth, removable appliances are often used for early intervention cases.

How orthodontic treatment works

Orthodontic appliances can be made of ceramic, plastic, or metal. They may be removable or they may be brackets bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to a corrected position. This is a great time to wear braces – you can customise nearly everything! Gone are the days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth. You can choose brackets that are clear or a metallic colour. You can choose the colour of the ties that hold the wire in brackets. Wires are also less noticeable than they used to be and the latest technologies move teeth faster with less discomfort.

Timeframe

At your complimentary initial consultation we will advise you of an approximate timeframe for your treatment. This is an average time and depends on a number of factors including your commitment to keeping regular visits so your treatment stays on track.

Treatment time typically ranges from one to two years, depending on the growth of the patient's mouth and face and the severity of the problem. Patients grow at different rates and will respond differently to orthodontic treatment, so the time to treatment completion may be longer or shorter than the original estimate. Using prescribed elastic bands and good oral hygiene are important factors in achieving the most efficient treatment. Early treatment procedures may take as little as six months.

Missing appointments will delay treatment. Visits are typically 5-10 minutes per appointment. Longer appointments may be necessary at periods during treatment. It is very important to make your future appointments before leaving.

Post treatment

After the braces have been removed, retainers are necessary to hold the teeth in their corrected positions while the bone hardens after tooth movement. Smiling Wide have a range of retainers to suit varying retention requirements for each individual. Exact details of your individual retention programme can be discussed at your initial complimentary consultation appointment.

Relapse

Teeth can have a tendency to move back to their original positions once braces are removed. This is why a retainer is necessary. After your braces have been removed you will be assessed at regular intervals.
